1. General information
Diagnose, plan and carry out a general multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated treatment of limited complexity in elderly adult patients and patients with special medical and psychophysical needs.
- Acquire the necessary skills and aptitudes to recognize the special patient and to propose our therapeutic attitude adapted to their conditions.
- Learn how to handle and deal with special patients and their families.
- Manage systemic risk situations from the preventive and therapeutic point of view.
- Know, interpret and manage laboratory data, laboratory tests, pathological anatomies, pharmacology in the context of elderly and special patients
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, such that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement: Goal 3: Health and Wellness.
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results:
Identify symptoms referred by patients of all ages as well as special patients.
Integrate the medical and dental knowledge necessary to safely, efficiently and logically perform all types of clinical dental procedures on disabled and medically compromised patients.
This subject will enable the student to:
- Diagnose and plan, on a general basis, multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated treatment of limited complexity in patients of all ages and conditions and in patients with special needs
- Establish the patient's current medical situation by performing professional interconsultations and requesting and interpreting relevant complementary tests.
- Establish prevention protocols and comprehensive treatment plans individualized to each clinical situation.
- Develop the necessary skills for behavioral management of patients with disabilities or special needs.
3. Syllabus
- Concept of special patient. Risk assessment in the dental office. Patients with infectious diseases . Anxiety and stress.
- Cardiovascular diseases.
- Endocarditis. Alterations in hemostasis.
- The oncologic and immunosuppressed patient. Renal and hepatic insufficiency.
- Respiratory and endocrine diseases. Pregnancy.
- The patient with mental and neurological disorders.
- The special paediatric patient. concept, epidemiology and social context. The sensory impaired child patient . Dental clinic adapted to deaf and blind paediatric patients. Autism.
- Bisphosphonates.
- Anesthetic principles, sedation, general anesthesia in special patients.
- Introduction to gerodontology. Biological changes produced by aging.
- Systemic diseases in old age. Geriatric pharmacology.
- Psychogerontology.
- Diagnosis in gerodontology.
- Caries management in elderly patients.
- Periodontal disease in the elderly patient.
- Oral mucosal pathology in the elderly. Traumatic iatrogenic injuries.
- Oral and dental infections in the elderly.
- Precancer and oral cancer in the elderly patient.
- Prosthesis and implantology in the elderly.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical classes. The participatory master class will be used. During the presentation, dialogue will be encouraged by means of , questioning, problem-based learning, doubt resolution, etc.
Practical classes. They will be held at the Dental Clinic. At the end of the term, the student must present a portfolio produced during the realization of the different activities proposed. Attendance to practices and the presentation of the portfolio will be mandatory.
Group work. Group work will include literature search and review, writing and oral presentation in the classroomencouraging reflection and debate.
Tutoring.
5. Assessment system
Evaluation criteria of the subject*:
- Clinical practices (40% of the final grade)
- Group work (15% of the final grade)
- Theoretical written test (40% of the final grade): The written theoretical test will be a multiple-choice test with 50 questions and four answer options, only one of which is valid. Wrong questions do not penalize the result, but to pass the test it is necessary to reach 70% of correctlyanswered questions , i.e. 35 correct answers, which would correspond to 5 out of 10.
- Regular attendance to theoretical classes, as well as active participation in proposed activities and debates (5% of the final grade)
- Attendance to practices and seminars is mandatory.
